What is Kinesio Taping?
Kinesio Tape was developed by Dr. Kenzo Kare, a Japanese chiropractor, to help athletes gain support without reducing movement. He developed the tape in the late 1970s, and it has been in use ever since. If you have ever watched volleyball, bike races, or basketball and have seen strips of tape applied in patterns across the arms, knees, shoulders, and backs, then you are already familiar with Kinesio Tape. The tape provides support, reduces pain and swelling, and improves performance for athletes prone to injury.
The Kinesio Taping Method
The Kinesio Taping Method is a therapeutic taping technique used on athletes and others that have suffered pain and injury. The tape is applied after the athlete is evaluated to determine the best application for their issue. Kinesio tape is applied in hundreds of ways to reduce pain and inflammation following surgery and for other joint and muscle issues. The treatment begins with evaluation and assessment. A complete body assessment is necessary. It will include:
- Manual muscle testing
- Range of motion testing
- Gait review
- Variety of orthopedic tests as needed
After these tests, our chiropractor will develop the proper treatment. This may include Kinesio tape application as well as other treatment modalities. Kinesio tape has positive effects on the body, including:
- Improved physiological effects on the skin
- Improvement in the lymphatic and circulatory system
- Supports muscles, ligaments, joints, and tendons
Kinesio Tape is used for injuries and as a preventative measure to help those with chronic injuries on certain parts of their body.
