Soft Tissue Therapy

Fitchburg Chiropractor Offers Soft Tissue Therapy

Soft tissue therapy is not just massage therapy. It is massage therapy combined with targeted muscle manipulation techniques that provide longer-lasting relief when it comes to pains and stiffness than what remedial massage therapy alone provides. At Infinite Athlete Chiropractic & Rehab in Fitchburg, WI, we are trained to provide you with the exact level of soft tissue therapy you need to get back to optimal health.

Inactivity and Injury Causes Scar Tissues to Form

Over a long period of inactivity or years of repeated movements (such as those found on the job), our bodies develop pockets of scar tissue that hold our muscles in place. These pockets of scar tissue vary in size, tension, and location within the body. They can be stuck near where two muscles meet, form near nerve endings, or even impede blood flow to certain body extremities.

Active Release Therapy

To help break up these pockets of scar tissue, a method called active release therapy (ART) is used. During these treatments, specific muscles are extended, stretched, and then relaxed in timed intervals with hand or finger pressure applied at one or more endpoints of the muscle. Targeted focus breaks up pockets of scar tissue, frees up the fluid between the cells to start moving back in a normal direction, and increases blood flow to the area. This process accelerates healing.

Manual Soft Tissue Mobilization

This technique is similar to ART, but may use specialized stainless-steel tools pressed against the muscle as the chiropractor manipulates it. The device is used to help sense vibration within the muscles during and after the muscle manipulation. The levels of vibration indicate where problems still lie. When the doctor is manipulating the muscles, it may feel a little odd at first. Still, it's exactly what the muscle needs to release the tension, break up any scar tissues that may have been keeping it in position, and free up the healing fluids your body already provides.

Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation

Don't let this long name scare you. It means that there are roughly about 10 seconds after muscle contraction where it's incredibly relaxed before it naturally starts to tense again. It's in this ten-second window that the person performing soft tissue therapy can lengthen your muscle more than average to help get it unstuck and feeling better.
